Lease-End Inspection Checklist (Avoid Surprise Bills)

Educational explainer. U.S.-focused. Lease contracts vary—always read your actual agreement.

Lease-end bills often happen because people show up unprepared. A checklist approach reduces surprises and gives you documentation if you dispute a charge.

Do this: Take dated photos/video of every panel, wheels/tires, windshield, and the interior on the day you return it.

Before the inspection

  • Clean the vehicle (inside and out)
  • Gather maintenance records
  • Confirm you have all keys/fobs and accessories
  • Check tires for tread depth and damage

Photos that matter

  • All 4 sides, front/rear, roof
  • Close-ups of any damage
  • Odometor reading and VIN plate
  • Interior seats, dash, cargo area

After the inspection

Keep the inspection report. If charges arrive, compare them to the report and your photos. Ask for itemization.
